Mata Hari

Greta Garbo as Mata Hari

Just today I have discovered a magnificent woman who comes attached to an intriguing life story and that woman is Mata Hari. I discovered her after sifting through the blog archives of
Art Deco and came upon a beautiful picture of Greta Garbo playing Mata in the 1931 adaptation of her life.
Mata Hari was a dancer, courtesan and allegedly, a spy. She was born in 1876 (as Margaretha Geertruida Zelle) in the Netherlands. When she was just 18 she replied to an advert in a newspaper from an Army Officer looking for a wife. She married Rudulph MacLeod and together they moved to Java in the East Indies. It was here that Mata religiously studied the eastern culture and Indonesian dance in particular and this is where she changed her name which in Indonesian, meant "Eye of the sun". The marriage didn't work out and after two children together (who both subsequently died), the couple divorced 1906. After this, Mata moved to Paris where she struggled to support herself working as a circus horse rider and an artists model. She then gained recognition and acclaim as an exotic dancer helping to lead the modern dance movement and captivating many men along the way. As well as a stage name, she concieved a story that she was born a Hindu Princess of Java. She was known for her nude photographs wearing only a bejewlled bra and her act which included stripping herself of her clothing to reveal her bewelled body. As a courtesan, she had many relationships with high ranked men including a German Prince who paid for her luxurious lifestyle.
With World War I approaching she spent her time travelling between France, The Netherlands, Spain and Britain to avoid battlefields. During this time, she was interviewed and admitted to working for the French Millitary Intelligence as an agent but it remains unseen to this day, whether this was a lie. In 1917, Mata was arrested in her Paris hotel room and put on trial accused of spying on behalf of Germany and causing the deaths of at least 50,000 soldiers. Found guilty she was executed on 15 October, 1917 aged 41.
Mata reportedly blew her executioners kisses and said "Merci Monsieur" before flinging open her robe to reveal her naked body to the audience which happened to include a former lover. She also stated "Harlot, yes, but traitor, never,".
After her death, her body wasn't claimed by any family members but her head was embalmed and kept at the Paris Museum of Anatomy but an inquisition in 2000 discovered that the head had been missing since around 1954.

Her mysterious story remains an fascinating enigma- the exotic dancer working as a lethal double agent, using her powers of seduction to extract military secrets from her many lovers. Her story caught the attention of Hollywood and they made the film that I spoke of earlier.. I must see it to learn more about her story.
She is my current muse, perhaps the original Femme Fatal- I am enthralled by her/her life! And her amazing body adornments are really inspiring me to get into jewelry making, something I've been meaning to do for a while now!!

The ELITE

The lovely people at ELITE models- with whom I frequently work with, kindly invited me to their Christmas party which was last night and lots of fun.
Roast and I braved the cold and made our way central to Jalouse and were greeted with refreshing cocktails as soon as we'd stepped inside. It was such an impressive party with a constant flow of cocktails, canapes and cupcakes. There was also a photo booth which was the best party toy ever.. we had loads of fun in there with the wind machine.
Jalouse is a stunning club on Hanover square but I might need to put in a few more hours before I can make a regular appearance there, unfortunately. They had finger print identification on the cloakroom and UV door stamps.. the swankyness was dizzying. I did go to the party in the hope that it would be a perfect place to meet some photographers etc but that didn't really happen.
We were also impressed with the goodie bags which included St Tropez, Teeth whitener, Dry Shampoo, Nail varnish and a tea bag.
Thanks ELITE and Merry Chritmas to you and your lovely models!

Birthday Boy & Tessa Edwards

Monday was Adam's birthday and me being the amazing girlfriend that I am, got up at the crack of dawn (.. ok 7.30am) to prepare this little birthday breakfast spread. It wouldn't have been me if I didn't make some clumsy mistake so when I opened the pack of baloons I'd bought, I realised that they were in fact water bombs (!) and were impossible to blow up.. so I just scattered them around the table instead to add some colour. Adam teased that I poisoned him on his birthday because apparently his orange juice was a bit strange and gave him tummy ache. WOOPS! Anyways, I think he appreciated the effort :)
The previous weekend his family were down so we were treated to some amazing meals at restaurants Adam had picked out!
Firstly, on Saturday night the four of us went to The Modern Pantry on Clerkenwell Road which is this lovely restaurant in a huge house which has been delicately renovated. We dined upstairs in a room that seemed as though it was once somebody's saloon or something.. The food was quite tradtitionally english with a hint of the oriental. I had Duck with cabbage and a host of other things which I didn't recognise the name of but tasted delish! The others had sausages, steak and seabass all served with unsuspecting flavour.
On Monday, the actual birthday the two of us went to Bob Bob Ricard on Upper James Street in Soho and I can honestly say it was one of the best restaurants I've ever been to! The decor is insane. I never thought 4 different types of wallpaper in the same room could look so amazing. I can't even describe the decor but you are sat in these diner-esque booths with marble table tops and even a button to press if you want champagne delivered to your table. It was one of those restaurants that has all these little things that amuses you, like for instance they had imprinted their logo onto the slab of butter served with our bread, they also had a little hidden rail between each booth where they hung your coat and the sinks in the bathroom were all divided so you had your own little private hand wash area with warm towels. I had chicken kiev which came with sweet corn mash and Adam had pork something. Chicken kiev sounds a bit Saturday night TV dinner but apparently it's their most popular dish and it was laaavly. Everything was right about this place, the music, the lighting, the staff and the food. Adam, being the geeky graphic designer that he is got very excited about their logo which was literally everywhere.

On other news, I did a submission shoot this week for 125 Magazine so fingers crossed that they like it. Had a really great team from hair and make up, photographer to model and of course me, the stylist ;)
I used some A-MAZE jewlerry from this graduate designer called Tessa Edwards which I, and everyone else on the shoot were obsessed with. I so want some.

Burbs

Last week Adam, Skins and I went to the Burberry sample sale and I came away with this beauty!
I had to fight a girl for it. Well, she was trying it on and Adam said "Look, that girls found a sheepskin jacket" as he'd known I've been looking for one for ages. I thought that it must have been her own rather than Burberry stock as I'd never seen it before. But I went up to her and kindly said I'd love it if she didn't take it. She walked around with it on for another 20minutes teasing me but eventually went over to Adam and gave him it to give to me! I wanted to find her to say thank you but she was no where to be seen over the mass of frantic people.
We ended up queing for 2 hours, no lie. I was queing for this jacket and a cute metallic swing coat/mac, Adam was quing for an amazing aubergine Burberry Prorsum trench and Skins was quing for this checked trench. I cannot believe it took 2 hours but it was well worth it for £120! I can't take it off!
Anyway, this weekend is Adam's 26th Birthday! And the family are here to celebrate :D
